A side lacing is a very likely intepretation, but somehow I’m perplexed by why a dress which is buttoned on the front also has a side lacing.

But on the other hand, in the same manuscript there is a man’s garment with a similar depiction on the front of his garment:

and it is hard to imagine what else it would be than lacing. Lacing with points, instead of a spiral lace, maybe?

Teija’s maternity dress-cammonet makes a good point! In the past read about the Queen of France having ordered a buttoned down gown in connection with her pregnancy. I always thought it was because she could open the buttons to make more room for her belly? Then again, this dress type is not in any way specifically connected with pregnancy in general, looking at depictions of this kind of dress in art, for an instance.

It would be nice to know how to read the text of the manuscript! The stories about Lamech and his wives vary a lot – in fact, the Bible tells very little about him and the Speculum story is rather based on old Jewish stories instead. Lamech had two wives and he was singled out as the inventor of polygamy (depending on the author, frowned upon or not). In the Speculum, these wives tormented her husband (this is a symbolic link to Jesus suffering between paganism and Judaism). His wives had children, a total of four. In most sources, it says that both of them did – but – there is a version where Lamech had two wives so that one could bear him children and the other could just concentrate on “staying beautiful” (ed. note. this interpretation of the original source! Not mine!)

So I don’t know – could this picture relate to that interpretation and that is why the other one is visibly pregnant so that the reader can distinguish between the two wives?

Teijan äitiyspointti on hyvä! Aikaisemmin olen lukenut ranskan kuningattarelle tilatusta alas asti napitettavasta mekosta, joka on tilattu nimenomaan raskauden aikaan. Olen aina ajatellut että olisiko siinä syy, että sitä on saanut napitettua auki mahan kasvaessa. Toisaalta kuvissa se mekkotyyppi ei ole mitenkään erityisesti yhdistetty nimenomaan raskauteen.

Olisi kivaa osata lukea käsikirjoituksen teksti! Tarinat Lamechista vaimoineen vaihtelevat – Raamatussa itse asiassa kerrotaan hänestä vain vähän ja Speculumin tarina perustuu vanhoihin juutalaisiin tarinoihin. Lamechilla oli kuitenkin kaksi vaimoa ja hänet mainitaankin moniavioisuuden aloittajana (kirjoittajasta riippuen paheksutaan tai ei). Speculumin mukaan nämä vaimot välillä kiusasivat miestään (tässä on vertauskuvallinen yhteys Jeesukseen pakanallisuuden ja juutalaisuuden välissä). Vaimoilla oli lapsia, yhteensä neljä. Ilmeisesti useimmissa lähteissä niitä on molemmilla – MUTTA – on olemassa versio, jonka mukaan Lamech piti kahta vaimoa siksi että toinen synnyttäisi hänelle lapsia ja toinen “pysyisi kauniina”. (toim. huom. tämä siis alkuperäisen lähteen tulkinta!!)

Eli en tiedä viittaisiko tämä kuva siihen tulkintaan ja olisiko siksi toinen heistä pieniin päin, että lukija erottaisi vaimot toisistaan?

Itselläni on myös tuollainen mekko, ostettu valmiina, ja siinä on ihan halkio…toki siinä on vähän ylimääräistä kangasta et voi revitellä halkiota eikä heti alusmekko vilku. Liekö ollut tavallisella kansalla varaa päällismekkoihin joissa riittää kangasta koko mahan tarpeisiin vai onko alusmekko saanut näkyä nyörin raoista?
